Description
Piano 1, Piano 2 — The Quaker minister and painter Edward Hicks is best known for his more than sixty Peaceable Kingdom pictures. These paintings represent a messianic prophecy from the book of Isaiah:The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. (Isaiah 11:6)When Lara Downes asked me to write her a piano concerto, I took note of her gentle style, and the title THE PEACEABLE KINGDOM came quickly to mind. This lyrical one-movement work is in a modified Rondo form, ABACD.– Adolphus Hailstork When pianist Lara Downes first spoke with Adolphus Hailstork to propose a concerto commission, the composer was so taken by her gentle style that THE PEACEABLE KINGDOM quickly came to mind as inspiration for the concerto. This image refers to a series of paintings by the American artist and Quaker minister, Edward Hicks. Hicks is best known for his 62 Peaceable Kingdom paintings, inspired by a messianic prophecy from the book of Isaiah: "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them." In his PIANO CONCERTO NO. 2, Hailstork has created a Peaceable Kingdom by means of pastoral instrumentation, and friendly interplay between the soloist and orchestra. This publication provides the solo part and piano reduction of the orchestra. A full score is available for sale separately, and the orchestral set is available on rental.
