Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Double Bass — VORTEX derives from a reading of Edgar Allan Poe's short story A Descent into the Maelstrom (1841). The work was composed for the string orchestra at the Greenwood Music Camp in 1999 at the request of its conductor Fredric Cohen. In 2025, the work was extensively revised. Previously titled DITHYRAMB
