Description

Soprano Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Piano — My second woodwind quintet Feng (Introduction and Rondo) for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn was originally commissioned by the San Francisco Citywinds with a Chamber Music America’s Classical Music Commissioning Award in the USA. The world premiere was given on Jan. 13, 1999 at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, CA, and the New York premiere was given on Jan. 17, 1999 at St. Malachi/The Actors' Chapel at the CMA Commissioning Showcase concert. The character "feng" in Chinese means "wind" or "the winds", also "view, folk songs, style and manner..." I use the sound of the standard western wind instruments to express the eastern feeling of the winds in the music. The duration is about 12 minutes. The new version of the piece is entitled Feng II (Introduction and Rondo). It’s adapted for saxophone solo with a saxophone quartet and piano, for Profs. Shyen Lee, Jean-Pierre Baraglioli, Keiji Munesada, Richard Dirlam, William Street, and Yi-An Chen to give the world premiere at the 18th World Saxophone Congress held in July 2018 in Zagreb, Croatia. Dr. Chen's woodwind quintet Feng is a 12-minute depiction of winds through winds. The Chinese "feng" translates to "wind" or "the winds," and Chen uses the Western woodwind quintet to explore "the Eastern feeling of the winds in the music." Her transcription for solo saxophone, saxophone quartet, and piano is titled Feng II, and was premiered at the 18th World Saxophone Congress, July, 2018, in Zagreb.
