Description
Alto Saxophone, Percussion, Vibraphone, Crotales, Bass Drum, Tenor Drum, Field Drum, Snare Drum, Bongos, Suspended Cymbal, Tam-Tam — Encounters IX was commissioned by Baylor University for David Hastings and Larry Vanlandingham.xa0 It was premiered July 9, 1982 at the International Saxophone Congress in Nuremburg, Germany by Hastings and Vanlandingham.xa0 The work is in one continuous movement with a variety of sections within.xa0 As with the other works in my “Encounters” series, particularly those involving solo percussion and an instrument, the attempt is draw out the relationships as well the differences between the two soloists.xa0 This means that sometimes the percussion will be melodic and sometimes the saxophone will be percussive.xa0 The rest of the time they will be doing their own thing.—William Kraft
