Violin, Piano — The pentatonic melody heard at the beginning in the Violin, andanswered later in the Piano, is my original melody composed in thestyle of a Cantonese folk song.The middle section, as a contrast, is more active and energetic,with its momentum brought to a climax before the recapitulation. Beautifully atmospheric and within reach of advanced students, Fisherman's Song is a poignant addition to every violinist's repertoire. Chen Yi describes the main theme as evocative of the ornamented pentatonic style often found in Cantonese folk songs, with a gentle piano texture supporting the violin's melody.
