Fantasy Variations

Cello — The work is comprised of a theme and four variations.xa0 Aspects of the two main ideas – one brooding, the other rhapsodic – appearing at the outset of the work, are taken through a series of transformations.xa0 Each successive section is both a variation, and increasingly, as the work unfolds, also a fantasy, revealing new facets of previously heard materials.xa0 The fourth variation has the character of a recapitulation.xa0 Fantasy-Variations was commissioned by cellist Andre Emelianoff.
