Violin Concerto No. 2

Violin, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon, Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2, Horn in F 3, Horn in F 4, Trumpet in C, Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, Tubular Bells, Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Double Bass — RETURN was inspired by a performance that my MIT colleague, Natalie Lin Douglas, gave online during Covid. Her beautiful sound and strong interpretations beckoned me to write a violin concerto for her, and what better way to celebrate M.I.T. than to include the M.I.T. Symphony Orchestra, conducted by our dear colleague Adam Boyles?RETURN is titled after its form, as about half way through a series of explorations of a harmonic idea, the music starts going backwards, and returns to its beginning.
