Description

Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3 — Kuhlau’s 3 Trios, Opus 13, are some of the most beautiful music ever written for three flutes. This edition provides a much needed score of this work. Also included is an alternative part for Flute 3 for Alto Flute. Kuhlau is known as the ‘Beethoven of the Flute’. His flute duets, trios and 1 quartet are still considered some of the best music ever written for these combinations and flutists love to play his works. The ensemble and technical challenges of these trios along with their great beauty have made them a staple in the flutist’s repertoire. In preparing these pieces I would often play them as “duets” playing one line from the score while a student played another line. This was very helpful in better understanding the complexities of the counterpoint and for working out ensemble difficulties. Many sections were very beautiful with just two lines being played. This edition provides a much needed score for these outstanding chamber works. An alternative 3rd Flute part for Alto Flute works very well, expanding further the literature for the Alto. The included score allows for a much stronger understanding of the beautiful counterpoints and rich harmonies of these excellent trios.
