Clarinet in A, Piano — Peter Schickele’s DUO SONATA was commissioned and premiered by Paul Petrucelli in 2013, in conjunction with the latter’s doctoral focus on contemporary literature for Basset Clarinet. Due to the composer’s busy schedule of commissions and performances, as well as declining health during the years that followed, the work was not presented for publication during Schickele’s lifetime. We have made every effort to render his intentions faithfully, based on available materials and decades of experience working with the composer from his manuscripts.While composed for Basset Clarinet and Piano, DUO SONATA was written with an ossia part for A Clarinet, both of which are included in this edition. The publication lists A Clarinet first for its greater relevance to most players. An exciting addition to the recital repertoire for A Clarinet and Piano, Peter Schickele’s DUO SONATA effortlessly blends tradition and spontaneous invention. One of the composer’s final works, the 15-minute sonata is a substantial addition to the literature, unfolding in four serious-yet-charming movements: Serenade, Scherzo, Cantilena, and a rollicking set of delightfully off-kilter Pirate Variations. Originally conceived for Basset Clarinet, the composer also prepared an A Clarinet version of the solo part to increase its reach. Both versions are elegantly presented in this edition as equally viable artistic options.
