Description

Piano — Among the works published in Supplementary volume 9 of the New Liszt Edition are several which are extant in fragmentary form only, or which are published here for the first time. As well as Liszt's piano score of Berlioz's Harold en Italie (symphony with viola solo), there are shorter late masterpieces (Excelsior! , Resignazione), album leaves presumably written for Marie von Sayn-Wittgenstein in Woronińce, the unfinished Figaro and Don Juan fantasias which treat several themes by Mozart, the piano piece in A-flat major using the "Tristan chord", transcriptions based on Rossini's operas Maometto II and Siege de Corinthe, an unfinished piano piece in F major (presumably a record of an improvisation), a reworking of the Cavatina from Mayerbeer's Robert le Diable (not notated by Liszt in its entirety), and the piano part of the first version of the song Freudvoll und leidvoll, written for Pauline von Iwanowska, Marie von Sayn-Wittgenstein's grandmother (as facsimile only). The volume includes a detailed preface in German, English, and Hungarian, including new research findings and manuscript facsimiles, as well as critical notes in English. Along with the cloth-bound edition, a practical paperback version has also been published, the contents of which are identical, but for the omission of the critical notes.
