Description

Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — Sparkle City, along with “Hub-City,” is one of the nicknames of Spartanburg, South Carolina. The piece was commissioned by the Spartanburg District 7 5th Grade Honor Orchestra and is a reflection of their vibrant city. The piece begins with a bold, accented introduction. The main theme is presented by the first Violins at m. 9. Be sure to observe the staccato markings in the accompaniment as they help to propel the piece forward. xa0A crescendo pushes into the B-section at m. 25 which is reminiscent of the introduction. Be sure to observe the change in dynamics as they highlight the contrast from section to section. The second Violins and Violas restate the main theme at m. 35, this time with a countermelody in the first Violins. The B-section returns again at m. 49, this time up an octave, and is “echoed” at a piano dynamic at m. 57. Once again, be sure to utilize as much dynamic contrast as possible in this section. xa0The introductory material returns at m. 65 and pushes the piece to a dramatic conclusion. In his compositionSparkle City, George Sweet uses a very simple rhythmic figure that will make the first concert for beginning string orchestra students a shining success. The beautiful harmonies and rich textures are refreshing for a piece at this level.
