Flute, Piccolo, Sleigh Bells, Clarinet in Bb, Clarinet in Eb, Bass Clarinet, Sand Block, Violin, Viola, Violoncello, Piano, Percussion, Glockenspiel, Marimba, Maracas, Bamboo Chimes, Suspended Cymbal, Sizzle Cymbal, Gong, Tam-Tam, Bass Drum — Eckhardt's two-movement work Polarities was written for chamber ensemble, beginning with a lively, virtuosic opening and giving way to a spare, quiet section. In fact, the slower, more thoughtful writing serves as the anchor of this work.
