Flute 1, Flute 2, Piccolo, Oboe 1, Oboe 2, Clarinet in Eb, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bass Clarinet, Contrabass Clarinet, Bassoon 1, Bassoon 2, Alto Saxophone 1, Alto Saxophone 2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2, Horn in F 3, Horn in F 4, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Tenor 3, Euphonium, Tuba, Piano, Timpani — Morning Star was commissioned by the conductor of the Grand Ledge, Michigan High School Wind Symphony, Michael Kaufman, to celebrate the opening of the school’s new concert hall. It was premiered by the students in May of 1997. Morning Star is a happy piece about beginnings: the dawning of a new day, the opening of a new hall, the beginning of adult life for the young people who premiered the piece, and for those who are playing it now.
