Description

Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — Students will enjoy this energetic, intriguing piece where all instruments have active parts and get a turn at melodic themes. Written in time the accented, tied quarter notes across the bar line add to both the variety and energy of the composition. The key is E minor with hints of the Aeolian mode since there are no leading tones. A second theme in G major appears at m. 19 and includes four measures of pizzicato in all instruments except cello.Basically the composition is straight-forward, but the staccato quarter notes must be observed. Although we teach our students not to "clip" either notes or the ends of phrases, these staccato notes are written for their melodic effect. The accompanying quarter notes without staccato marks on beat 3 should be playedxa0 for their full values to contrast the melodic short notes (mm. 3, 5, etc.). This is a great piece for both concert and contest. Students will enjoy this energetic, intriguing piece in which each instrument has an active part and gets a turn at melodic themes. Composer David Hinds is new to the Carl Fischer catalog, but he has already proven himself as a composer that can write music fitting the needs of developing students while retaining sophistication and musical worth. We are proud to have David on the Carl Fischer team.
