Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — Written as an accessible introduction to the 3/4 time signature, First Star has a steady quarter note pulse throughout to help the ensemble stay together. Attention should be given to gently stressing the first note of each measure so that the performers and audience can really feel the beat. It is important to relax into the tempo rather than rush in order to emphasize the regal nature of the piece. The staccato rhythms should be crisp and energetic, and in contrast the non-staccato notes should be played with as much of the bow as possible to have a full sound. Written as an accessible introduction to 3/4 time, this Grade 1 work offers young ensembles the opportunity to explore basic rhythms, easy voice independence, and notes on the D, G, and A strings with no low-two finger patterns. Pizzicato and simple staccato add sparkle to this elegant theme with subtle hints of the familiar "twinkle" melody. Optional piano lends rhythmic support in this charming concert feature!
