The first section represents coming to a realization or learning something tragic for the first time and longing for hope. The second still reflects yearning, but the melodic fragments brew a storm of emotional turmoil which echo reminders of this new reality. In the third section, the piece finally seems to find its footing with a brass chorale setting, as the subject begins to come to terms with the circumstances. The first two sections end with a question mark, wondering what’s next, while the third answers these questions with a final deep breath of peaceful acceptance. Tracing the composer’s own experience in dealing with tragedy, this piece is dedicated to the memory of Micah Berry, whose life was suddenly taken away at the age of 21.
