Description
Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — This piece was commissioned by the American School in Japan (ASIJ). When I met the students of ASIJ for the first time, I saw their eyes sparkling when they were playing their instruments. After that I decided to write something about a life of the students. So the title Beautiful Flowers means the students themselves. This work consists of four movements, and they should be played without pause. The first one “Blooming” is like a prelude to the music. You could feel that something will begin soon with a feeling of hope. The second movement is music that is shiny and bright. If you can imagine feeling a brisk and clear wind in this piece, it will help your performance. The third movement “Sunset Waltz” sounds mellow. The evening twilight is coming on. The last movement is “Toward the Blue Sky.” After the dawn the glaring sunlight is waiting for you. The music is actively moving forward and ending clearly. A four movement work of contrasting "flower" themes played continuously. Each movement has a different style and feel that describe the titles of each movement: "Blooming," "Shiny Day," "Sunset Waltz," and "Toward the Blue Sky." It is a wonderful and serious new work for advancing ensembles.
