In use in the late 1800s, windjammers typically had three to five masts, were square-rigged and were able to travel transatlantic routes up to sixteen knots, a considerable speed at the time.The power of these magnificent ships is reflected in the energetic pulse that drives Windjammer. Even at m. 78, where a "mini-fugue" is introduced, the underlying pulse and sense of urgency must not be lost in the transparency of this section. At all times the rhythmic drive must be maintained. Composer Carl Strommen has also included a well-written mini-fugue section that continues to mirror the drive and majesty of these ships.
