Description

Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — The transcription ofxa0Pavane, Op. 50 by Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) attempts to reproduce the piece in a setting for string orchestra while keeping it playable by young musicians. To this end, the key of the piece has been changed from F# minor to E minor to accommodate the strings. The overall form is exact, with the exception of the development section. This was abbreviated to accommodate the grade level. Special care was given to orchestrating the piece as closely as possible to the way Faure intended.I would also strongly recommend that you play a recording of the full orchestra version for your students. This will give them a greater sense of the subtlety of the piece and how delicately it should be performed. There are many different ideas about the appropriate tempo for this composition. I have indicated a metronomic marking only as a reference; it is my opinion on interpretation. Use your own musical judgment to decide what is best for your circumstances. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope that you and your students find it useful for your program.-Larry ClarkNew York, NY 2003 A unforgettable melody from Gabriel Fauré for string orchestra! All the splendor of the impressionistic masterpiece is retained in this excellent arrangement and your first chair players even get brief solos for another captivating change of texture in this well-done version.
