Description

Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — The piece Phantom Echo plays on the idea of an echo and contains many echo-type effects and lots ofinterplay between the upper and lower strings. The piece is designed to be pizzicato throughout, but I havemarked an optional arco section, should you find that your players tire from playing the whole piece pizzicato.Sometimes the fingers of younger players get sore from plucking the strings too much. I leave this to your judgment, should you feel it necessary to have this break from pizzicato in middle of the piece. The piece should be mysterious throughout, and it is important that it not be taken too fast to start or rushed assometimes happens when students play pizzicato. Save the tempo change for the accelerando near the endof the piece. Much of the piece should be subtle and soft, but there are a few instances in which there is asudden forte note on beat 4. Exaggerate the echo effects throughout the piece. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it andfind it useful for your program.—LARRY CLARKLakeland, FL 2009 Phantom Echo is a delightful piece that uses sempre pizzicato and several echo effects to highlight the beginning string group. There are plenty of opportunities for all sections of the ensemble to be featured in this refreshing piece from popular composer Larry Clark.
