Description
Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Piano — Shockwave is an aggressive composition in the key of E minor. It uses only whole, half and quarter notes and is intended for young string groups with limited experience. The piece is built around two musical ideas. The first, the A theme, is a fanfare-type statement with the harmony cascading downward, creating some tension. This is followed by a B theme that moves upward and is more legato to contrast the marcato main theme. After a return of the main theme the piece begins a short development section, featuring interplay between the upper and lower strings. Fragments of both of the previous theme are used together. This is followed by a moment of repose before the aggressive main theme begins again, followed by a short coda to complete the piece. As with all of my pieces at this level, the tempo marking is given as a guide and should be adjusted to the needs of your ensemble. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece.I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program. Larry Clark delivers yet again with an energetic and aggressive piece that your students will want to play over and over. The sound is bold, brash and confident, which is exactly how your groups will feel when they perform this piece.
