Description
Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto, Piano — The text of Sleep, Beauty Bright is taken from a poem entitled A Cradle Song by William Blake (1757-1827). Written in 1789, A Cradle Song is one of several illustrated poems by Blake included in a large collection entitled Songs of Innocence and of Experience.A Cradle Song is a text about a mother sitting silently by her baby in the crib, looking at the baby in wonderment and love. The mother sits quietly, looking at this baby, marveling at the miraculous life that has joined the journey of life. Because of the emotional content of love, awe, and motherhood expressed in the text, this original setting was composed as a lullaby. Although the entire poem continues to express the future's uncertainty and life's challenges, this setting focuses only on the amazement and wonder of the moment. This setting begins in unison, and gradually becomes more complex as it progresses. The use of thirds in homophonic harmonies are prevalent, and countermelodies are also utilized to bring harmonies about. The melody must always be heard through any harmonic technique in use. You might need to adjust dynamics accordingly. Suspensions are used to create dissonances that are resolved on the following note. Lean into the dissonance, and gently resolve. The choral challenge of this setting is to keep the energy in each note throughout the octavo for intonation's sake, yet conveying the gentleness of a newborn's sleep. Enjoy! Sleep, Beauty Bright, based on William Blake’s A Cradle Song, captures a mother’s quiet awe and love as she gazes at her sleeping baby. Written for SSA choirs, the setting begins in unison and gradually introduces gentle harmonies and delicate countermelodies. Lean into the subtle dissonances and maintain a smooth, flowing line throughout. This lullaby invites singers to convey tender wonder, allowing the melody’s gentle beauty and emotional depth to shine.
