Description
Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass, Piano — Sing This Festive Day is a song of celebration that depicts the feelings people wouldhave when commemorating a major event. The fast tempo and the lilt of the 6/8 timeare written so as to give the singers and the audience a feeling of energy. This energymakes the song perfect as a program opener, and the formal nature of music wouldalso make it appropriate for a competition. This new voicing, SAB (with optional tenor), will work very well for SAB choirs, but for adifferent reason than one would expect. In this voicing, the altos and basses sing inoctave unison for the entire song, as do the tenors and sopranos, resulting in only twoparts. Singers in a very small section will feel comfortable singing in octave unison withthe larger group. For example, a director of a choir with only six baritones could easilysplit them up into, say, two tenors singing with the sopranos, and four basses singingwith the altos. This two-part texture makes learning parts much easier, giving the director more time towork on stylistic concerns. Also, the vocal ranges in this edition have been carefullycontrolled so as to fit the comfortable ranges of most tenors and basses. In particular, the range of a minor sixth for tenors (G3 to Eb4) will make that part accessible to a widerange of singers.
