Description

Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass, Piano, Handbells — This setting of Ring Out, Wild Bells was inspired by the well-known poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892). The poem is actually a part of In Memoriam, a tribute to Arthur Henry Hallam, the fiance of Lord Tennyson's sister who died at the very young age of 22. This setting is based on that hopeful poem. The story is that Tennyson heard the muffled church bells ringing from an abbey on New Year's Eve as they rang out the old year. The sound changed to a brighter tone to ring in the new year, signifying the hope of something different in the future. The basic purpose of this setting is one of encouragement. No matter what we have experienced in the past, circumstances can change into something better as we embark on a new year, with renewed zest for life, happiness, and opportunity. The energy of this setting is due to its driving style throughout, using syncopation to add momentum, and unison voices to provide strength. Imitation and unison is used in the vocal parts, with limited four part harmony, created with accessibility in mind for younger choirs through adult ensembles. Optional handbells (or any pitched bells - chimes, keyboard, etc.) are added on the last presentation to create what Tennyson might have heard from the abbey. The bell pattern is repeated, with a bit of limited modification. All of the contributing musical elements combine and drive to the end in a glorious ending, complete with the bells ringing and vocal parts singing at fortissimo. Enjoy! Ring out, sing out! Earlene Rentz’s Ring Out, Wild Bells brings Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s hopeful New Year’s poem to life with energy and joy. Inspired by church bells ringing out the old year and welcoming the new, this setting encourages renewal and optimism. Its driving syncopation, unison strength, and accessible harmonies make it ideal for developing mixed choirs. Optional handbells or chimes add brilliance to the triumphant ending, creating a celebration of hope and opportunity. Perfect for marking new beginnings, this piece is a dynamic addition to any program!
