Da Pacem Domine

Description

Voice 1, Voice 2, Voice 3, Piano — Da Pacem Domine is a popular canon by Melchior Franck. Unlike many rounds or canons, it has a narrow range of a perfect fifth (do to sol, or scale degrees 1 to 5). In addition, it is imitated at the dominant (sol, or 5). These two characteristics make this to be one of the finest canons for choirs containing changing voices. It is the only canon I recommend for middle school TTB or mixed choruses.I would encourage choirs to learn the short six-measure melody in unison using solfege or scale degree numbers. I have found it easy to teach the answer as if it also begins on the tonic (do or 1) as well. Next, try singing the question and the answer in canon using solfege or numbers (sopranos and tenors together, altos and baritones together).
