Description

Tenor, Bass, Piano — Still, Still, Still is an Austrian lullaby. The melody was first published in a folksong collection of Vinzenz Maria Süß in 1865, who founded the Salzburg Museum, and the German lyrics are attributed to Georg Götsch. The German word “still” translates to "hushed" in English, and the original carol tells of the Christmas story of Jesus’ birth and the angels' celebration. The English text used in this song takes a more general approach describing snow falling as a baby sleeps. The recognizable melodic opening of the carol is split between both voice parts throughout the piece to help with accessibility for limited ranges.Throughout the piece, stress on the 1st and 3rd beat of each measure, thereby taking weight off of beats 2 and 4 will enhance the musicality, as will connection from note to note. One of the most well-known and beloved Christmas tunes, the Austrian Carol Still, Still, Still, arranged here for the emerging tenor-bass choir, is sure to be a favorite at the holiday concert. With supportive piano accompaniment and ideal vocal ranges, it is a superb teaching piece as well.
