From theNortheast’s lush mountains and vast freshwater lakes tothe Great Plains and the rugged West, the landscape isexpansive and endlessly inspiring. Yet, I have alwayswondered what lay beyond.Alaska, the "Last Frontier," embodies thisunknown. It is the largest, least populated, andnorthernmost state, home to 56 million acres ofwilderness and 60% of all National Park Service land.Nearly 18,000 years ago, a land bridge connectedAlaska to Russia, allowing the first Indigenous peoplesto inhabit North America (nps.gov). Its ancient historyand untouched landscapes create a spiritualenvironment unlike any other. In June 2023, I joined five composers forComposing in the Wilderness, part of the FairbanksSummer Arts Festival. Guided by two wildernessexperts, we spent five days on Lower Tazimina Lake inLake Clark National Park, one of the most remotelocations on Earth. After multiple flights and afloatplane landing, we arrived in a world of alpinetundra, snow-capped mountains, and endless daylight. This journey inspired West of Nowhere, acomposition reflecting Alaska’s vastness and mystery. The piece evolves through shifting timbres, tracing myexperience—from dreaming of Alaska to soaringthrough its mountains, culminating in a meditativemoment on a mountain summit.”- Ryan McQuay Meredith Alaska, the "Last Frontier," embodies the unknown.
