Description

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) composed his THREE IMPROMPTUS, Op. 78 in 1911, originally for organ, during the final year of his life. These compact yet expressive pieces reveal his mastery of Romantic idioms, blending lyrical melodies with rich harmonic textures that highlight the instrument's coloristic possibilities. Although there is no evidence of a public premiere during his lifetime, the works were published shortly after his death and became part of the repertoire of church and recital organists in the early 20th century. Today, while not as frequently performed as his large-scale choral works such as HIAWATHA'S WEDDING FEAST, the IMPROMPTUS stand as elegant examples of Coleridge-Taylor's compositional voice for the organ and are valued for their craftsmanship and charm, contributing to the ongoing rediscovery of his instrumental music. Reprint edition.
