Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) composed Toward the Unknown Region in 1906, setting a visionary text by the American poet Walt Whitman from Leaves of Grass. Written for chorus and orchestra, the work reflects Vaughan Williams's growing fascination with expansive, spiritual themes and his emerging personal style, shaped by both English musical traditions and his studies with Maurice Ravel.
