Description

Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 38 'Spring' was composed in 1841 by Robert Schumann (1810-1856) during a remarkable burst of creative energy following his marriage to Clara Wieck, a period that marked his transition from piano music to large-scale orchestral works. Inspired in part by a poem by Adolf Bttger describing the awakening of spring, the optimistic symphony creates a sense of renewal, though Schumann ultimately withdrew explicit programmatic titles in favor of a more abstract interpretation. The work was premiered on March 31, 1841 in Leipzig by the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the direction of Felix Mendelssohn, and it was immediately well received, establishing Schumann as a symphonic composer of significance. The Symphony No. 1 'Spring' remains a central work in the Romantic orchestral repertoire. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Perc(1): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.
