Description

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) composed his SYMPHONY No. 35 in D Major, K. 385, in the summer of 1782. It is also known as the HAFFNER SYMPHONY after the affluent Salzburg family by which it was commissioned. The occasion of the premiere was to celebrate the ennoblement of Haffner's song Sigmund. In preparation for the first public performance at the Burgtheater in Vienna on March 23, 1783, Mozart scrapped two movements and embellished the instrumentation with flutes and clarinets. As Joseph II had been in attendance, he later wrote that he was pleased by the Emperor's enthusiastic applause. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set).
