Description

In 1778, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) charmed his way into the music scene in Paris with his Symphony No. 31 in D major, first performed on June 12 at the house of Count Sickingen by the Concert Spirituel. It follows a three-movement structure, which was preferred by his new audience, and absorbs the Parisian appetite for flamboyant style over melodic substance. Though the original slow movement (featured in this Kalmus edition) has found more popularity, Mozart wrote another one at the request of the director, Jean LeGros. In a letter to his father, Mozart declared that he felt more satisfied with the replacement, but that version is the less performed of this most famous symphony. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set).
